For a lot of busy individuals, Same-Day CEREC® Crowns have been an answered prayer. Whether you have been given short notice to attend a big event, or if you need to look great for an upcoming interview, same-day dental crowns can be an absolute life-saver. These crowns allow you to come into your dentist’s office, and walk out with your smile fully restored.
One of the obvious advantages of Same-Day CEREC® Crowns is the time-saving convenience. Although there are many other advantages that have made this procedure very popular with patients, there are also a few disadvantages you’ll need to consider.
Below are some of the pros and cons of Same-Day CEREC® procedures.
Pros of Same-Day CEREC Crowns
- They can immediately restore the function of your teeth.
It’s to no surprise that your teeth affect your smile, how you talk and even your eating habits. If you happen to be waiting for a dental laboratory to design a permanent crown, you’ll normally have a temporary crown placed, which means you’ll have to be pretty careful when eating or talking. In some cases, the dentist will even have you follow a very specific diet so that the temporary crown does not fall off. This is never the case with Same-Day Crowns.
- They can prevent injury.
When it comes to traditional crowns, you’ll have to wear a temporary crown for a couple days. Unfortunately, the temporary crown may not always fit well in your mouth and it can come loose. This can often cause injuries many other issues. Same-Day CEREC® Crowns greatly reduce the risk of injury by giving you a crown that fits in just one visit. CEREC® Crowns also require a lot less drilling, which means we are saving most of your tooth.
- It saves you money!
These appointments, and the temporary crowns, will cost you some money even with insurance. CEREC® Crowns can help you save money by cutting your dentist’s visits in half, and eliminating the need any temporary crowns. Also, for some people, fewer appointments means less time you’ll have to take off work and miss out on that day’s income.
- Comfortability!
Most of the temporary crowns that you get placed when getting your permanent crown are made from resin, and they will rarely ever fit and will easily fall off. This can make them very uncomfortable to wear, even just for a few days. CEREC® Crowns are created with ceramic and will fit perfectly, which makes them very comfortable.
- They can prevent decay.
Since temporary crowns can sometimes fall off, that makes room for possible, further decay of your tooth. This is never a problem with Same-Day CEREC® crowns.
Disadvantages of Same-Day CEREC Crowns
- Permanent (porcelain fused to metal crowns) are stronger.
With CEREC® Crowns, they are created with technology that uses a block of ceramic to design your new crown. Traditional, permanent crowns can consist of porcelain, ceramic, metal, or porcelain fused to metal. A metal crown is a bit stronger, due to the combination of metal and porcelain.
Metal has also been proven to bond better to your teeth. Which means traditional crowns are more resistant to fracture or wear and tear, making them much more durable than CEREC® Crowns.
- Do you have a fracture below the gumline?
The CEREC® Camera cannot capture the image properly if the tooth’s fracture extends below the gum line. So, if this is the case, a permanent, traditional crown will be a better fit.
So, if you are an extremely busy person, multiple visits to your dentist’s office for a permanent crown will be the last thing you’ll want to do. Same-Day CEREC® Crowns make the entire process a lot less complicated and exceptionally faster. However, as stated above, the procedure has both its advantages and disadvantages. So, it is very important to discuss your options with us before making a final decision.
